Y no fue el único: Sheinbaum ya había evitado la inauguración en el Estadio Azteca precisamente para blindarse de los abucheos del público mexicano, y buscó en Nueva York el escenario controlado que en su país no tiene. En ese mismo palco de cristal estaban el Rey Felipe VI, la Reina Letizia, el presidente Pedro Sánchez, el primer ministro Mark Carney y ella. Trump, que hace dos semanas dijo en la cumbre de la OTAN que España era una "causa perdida" con la que no quería comercio, terminó sonriendo junto al Rey y entregándole la copa a los campeones españoles.
Y fíjese en un detalle que lo dice todo. Los únicos lugares donde se han reunido los presidentes de México y Estados Unidos son un estadio y un museo. Ahí, sonrisas. En la vida real, sentencias. Ni un solo anuncio del gobierno de Estados Unidos acompañando a la política de México. El fútbol ha sido el pretexto, no el candado: no detiene nada de lo que viene.
Y cuidado con las fotos, porque las fotos no siempre dicen lo que pasó. La imagen del palco muestra sonrisas y cercanía. El video que circula en redes, y que le mostré a mi público, muestra otra cosa: el momento en que Trump baja a la cancha con Infantino a entregar el trofeo, entre abucheos, y Sheinbaum queda atrás, fuera del centro de la escena, sola sobre el campo de juego después de que ellos ya se habían ido. La postal oficial y el video no cuentan la misma historia. Y en política, lo que queda fuera de cuadro suele decir más que lo que posa dentro de él.
Y aquí es donde tengo que parar la parte abierta, porque lo que sigue no lo va a leer en ningún otro lado. Hoy, mientras usted lee esto, el juez Cogan cierra en Brooklyn el expediente del Mayo. Last night, in a luxury box at MetLife Stadium, Spain beat Argentina in the World Cup final on a Ferran Torres goal in extra time, and Donald Trump walked onto the field to hand over the trophy. He was loudly booed when the screens showed him. And he was not the only one avoiding a hostile crowd: Sheinbaum had skipped the opening at the Azteca Stadium precisely to shield herself from booing by the Mexican public, seeking in New York the controlled stage she does not have at home. In that same glass box sat King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister Mark Carney and her. Trump, who two weeks ago said at the NATO summit that Spain was a "lost cause" he wanted no trade with, ended up smiling next to the King and handing the cup to the Spanish champions.
And notice a detail that says everything. The only places the presidents of Mexico and the United States have met are a stadium and a museum. There, smiles. In real life, sentences. Not one announcement from the U.S. government backing Mexico's policy. Football has been the pretext, not the lock: it stops nothing of what is coming.
And be careful with the photos, because photos do not always say what happened. The box image shows smiles and closeness. The video circulating on social media, which I showed my audience, shows something else: the moment Trump walks down to the field with Infantino to hand over the trophy, amid boos, and Sheinbaum is left behind, out of the center of the scene, alone on the pitch after they had already gone. The official postcard and the video do not tell the same story. And in politics, what falls outside the frame usually says more than what poses inside it.
